Defiant Class

History : The Defiant Class of Starship was a hurried project that caused many
divisions in the Advanced Starship Design Bureau. The project at first officially
labeled
as the Valiant project, later changing to the Defiant project was briefed as a warship and
twelve submitted designs were considered. Relative newcomer to the team, Dr.
Tina Jezz was
given the project after his usual design provoked much interest. The ship itself, being
small did not need the vast keel structure to hold it in place therefore they were built
in the now infamous pod 13(one of the many star ship building facilities in a
Starbase).
Three ships were started on originally, although only one went on to completion. This
ship, the prototype vessel was designed for testing only.
The projected build time for the Defiant
class of Starship was set at an astonishing 18 months, almost a tenth of the time it took
to complete a standard size starship. During the build time a new team took over the
project after Dr. Jezz's untimely death and again redesigned the front end of the ship to
accommodate newly designed weapon arrays. The ship was released for testing in 2368,
however massive problems were found in the power systems, weapons arrays and the
structural integrity field. Simply put, it was overpowered for a ship of its size and with
a diminishing threat from the Borg the project was scrapped, leaving three ships in Pod 13
of Utopia Planitia, one complete but unusable and two bare frame chassis. The twist in the
Defiant projects tale was that the ship was eventually taken out of storage and posted at
Deep Space Nine after the discovery of the Dominion in the Gamma Quadrant. The two other
ships, the Valiant and an as yet unnamed ship are both ready to be assemble within a month
if necessary.
