Intrepid Class Escort/Explorer

Project First Submitted - 2361

History : The Intrepid Class Starship was considered one of the hardest ships the ASDB had to design to date with 12 redesigns completed before USS Intrepid was finally commissioned. The Original project brief was for a long range scout ship, however this was altered to an Explorer class vessel. One of the major considerations was a ship that could sustain high warp velocities for a greater length of time than what had currently been produced. As with most starship designs the first area for consideration was the Warp core. Using field data gathered from the Galaxy class project engineers felt that a number of modifications could be made to produce a high power and yet reliable MARA core. The ship was completed in record time partially due to the Weakened state of the Federation after the Borg incident at Worf 359.

The projected build time for the Intrepid Class Starship was originally set at 14 years, however with increased manpower, new facilities and equipment this was reduced to a record 5 years, nearly one third of the original estimate. However there were considerable modifications that took place during the construction of the ship, a prime example being the variable geometry Warp Nacelles which were only implemented within the last years of the construction.
