Miranda Class Light CruiserFirst Submitted: 2268 The Miranda class project was developed for Starfleet's need for a medium sized starship that would be easy to produce and provide adequate defensive and scientific capabilities that would require less upkeep than the larger Constitution class ships. This class, still widely used in the fleet was more of an "economy" ship. Because of it's "economical" nature, the designers planned on using existing starship components. At the project's inception, Starfleet was in the midst of updating and upgrading most of the designs and components throughout the fleet. The project was stalled for a year to take advantage of the new technologies, but the basic saucer with dual nacelles design was complete. When the new equipment was available, the project resumed. The starship's basic design utilized the new equipment developed by the constitution refit project and some components already put to use in the Soyuz class starship. The construction proceeded quickly and smoothly and the first production model, U.S.S. Miranda, NCC-1801 was delivered within 7 years. Many ships of this class were produced and emerged as one of the fleet's workhorse class of ships serving a variety of defensive, scientific and transport roles where larger starships would be a waste of resources. The Miranda class was thrust into the role as a science ship because of its weapons for situations near hostile areas where an Oberth was slow and badly under armed should any conflicts occur. The Miranda class is one of Starfleet's best and most flexible designs and remains a vital part of the fleet.
