Nebula Class heavy Cruiser/Explorer

Project First Submitted - 2349

History : The Nebula Class of Star Ship was a direct offshoot from the Galaxy Class project started in 2343. Starfleet, after viewing the potential that the Galaxy class project was offering decided to build a further class of ship based on the Galaxy Class ship. The specific idea that was liked by Starfleet was that a universal drive section to be built for emergency transportation. The Galaxy Class drive section was overly large and although very efficient at what it did, it was hard to rebuild. They needed a method of transporting a non warp capable saucer section and the brief was decided to build a small drive section using existing Galaxy class components that would be able to attach to a standard saucer section. However as the project continued and the first prototype was built they needed a saucer section to test the ship out, eventually borrowing the saucer section from USS Galaxy (much to the Galaxy teams disgust!). The ship proceeded into space for two weeks where the test crew found it to be a amicable and friendly ship. Upon returning to Starbase Starfleet decided to pursue this experiment further, building a saucer section specifically for the project, at this point now officially named Nebula. Further upgrades and redesigns were done on the vessel and further space frames were built. Eventually the first ship, USS Nebula was deemed deep space worthy. Overall, the Nebula class of ships are very able and friendly ships suitable for a host of missions, although the very mission they were designed for has never been put to operation as yet. An inside joke at Utopia Planitia is the inscription just below the registry number. Look closely and you will find the words:
Designed in a Bar, Built in a Shed, Piloted by Madmen.
Quite who started this off nobody knows.
